The Sapienza University of Rome serves as a collegiate research institution which is situated in Rome in Italy. Earlier referred to as “La Sapienza”, it is considered as one among the largest European universities based on enrolments. As it was established in the year 1303, it is also regarded as one among the oldest in history. The objective of the university is to play a key role in the development of society through excellence, quality education, research, and International Corporation. It has been placed at the top of Italian universities by many leading universities of the world on the basis of its academic record and international dimension. In the year 2018, it was ranked 1st for classics and ancient history all over the world.
Sapienza University is home to many campuses in Rome, and its main campus is called University City. It is spread across an expanse of around 110 acres and is located close to the Roma Tiburtina Station. Also, the institution has satellite campuses situated outside Rome, out of which, the main one is in Latina. All the campuses of the university are well-equipped with facilities required for a conducive learning environment. From 65 departments to 11 faculties, 55 libraries and 18 museums, these have everything that can help students learn better. Additionally, it features a diverse range of sports, music and cultural activities to ensure all-round development of students.
The university houses about 112,000 students, 4000 teachers, 2000 employees, librarians and technicians along with 2000 administrative staff members in university hospitals. At present, it provides about 270-degree programs offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees to students. In the fields of natural sciences, humanities, biomedical sciences, and engineering, a variety of research programs are offered by Sapienza University. Even several international opportunities are provided by the university to students. Some of these include scholarships abroad, double degrees, international PhDs and internships in European and non-European countries.
Sapienza’s notable alumni network features many distinguished personalities including Presidents of the European Parliament, heads of several nations, Nobel laureates, European Commissioners, well-known religious figures, astronauts and scientists. Some of the names include mathematician Benedetto Castelli, biologist Paola S. Timiras, archaeologist Anna Maria Bisi and philosopher Giuseppe Ungaretti.
